2nd Meeting of the Deepwater Infrastructure Forum (DIF)
| Topic: | Balancing Reservoir Uncertainty with Production System Design |
| Presenter: | Ken E Arnold, P.E., CEO, Paragon Engineering Companies |
| Location: | CSO AKER, 1-10 at Kirkwood (North side of I-10), First floor, Conference room |
| Date: | Tuesday, March 26th. |

We received considerable encouragement after the first DIF meeting in September 2001 to proceed with a
series of meetings. In addition to the March meeting, discussed above, we plan the following future events:
- Nakika Project — June 26, 2002 (Joint with SPE).
- Development Workshop "Engineering Your Career" — August 22, 2002 (Joint with SPE).
- Builders All Risk Insurance — Fall 2002.
About the Topic
The detailed calculations and precise specifications and drawings that are needed to actually build production systems (they are, after all, often built with steel), convey an impression of precision and accuracy about production capacity and capability that is often unwarranted. The Oil and Gas reserves, and production forecasts are often, legitimately, only predictable in a broad range. The best strategy for production system design is to acknowledge the range of forecasts, and to design for reasonable flexibility and upgrading capabilities. The speaker will address this dilemma and lead a discussion of ideas and approaches to deal with this issue.
About the Speaker
Ken Arnold has a BSCE from Cornell and an MSCE from Tulane. He joined Shell in 1964 and in his early assignments worked as a Structural designer of several offshore platforms, then as a Facilities/Topsides designer and Project engineer as well. By the time he left Shell in 1980 to form Paragon Engineering he had completed assignments in:
- Research
- Surface engineering and construction
- Management of reservoir, geological, drilling, production, facility, chemical and gas plant engineering.
He is currently CEO of Paragon Engineering Services in Houston, a company that he founded, which with Paragon Litwin in Paris has a combined staff of over 750 people. Ken is the author of two books and over 50 technical articles about oil and gas facilities. He has been designated an SPE Distinguished Lecturer for 2003
on Facilities and Construction.
About DIF
