We have received considerable encouragement, after the first two DIF meetings to proceed with a series of additional meetings. We plan the following future events:
  • Development Workshop "Engineering Your Career" — August 22, 2002 (Joint with SPE).

  • Builders All Risk Insurance — Fall 2002.

About the Topic

Deepwater is the new frontier for offshore hydrocarbon development. Over the last 10 years there have been a number of high profile projects installed around the world, from the Gulf of Mexico to the West of Shetlands to the Philippines. In addition, projects are under execution or on the drawing boards for Brazil, West Africa, Indonesia, Norway, and others. Some of these projects have been extremely successful, while others have been technical and/or commercial failures. Experience that has been gained from companies that have lead the way into deepwater shows that a critical success factor is a whole systems solution.

A whole systems solution is the process of integrating the subsurface, the subsea system, and the surface facilities into a system that can balance the needs of high initial production to achieve project profitability, effective reservoir management to ensure total field recovery, and flexibility to adapt to present and future uncertainty. In addition, since deepwater is the new frontier, every development can be viewed as a new piece of regional infrastructure that can enable future developments.

This workshop will address the issues surrounding whole system design for deepwater developments. A case study using the Na Kika field, currently under development for 6340' of water in the Gulf of Mexico, will be used to illustrate the concepts. In addition, in line with the ASCE Deepwater Infrastructure Forum's goal to promote transfer of knowledge and create an environment for networking and relationship building, the opportunity will be presented for workshop participants to engage each other in discussions around technical and business drivers that must be considered in a whole system solution for different development scenarios.

About the Speaker

Bill Luyties is currently Project Manager for the Shell Na Kika Project. Bill has a BS and MS in Civil Engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He has been working for Shell for 25 years in the area of offshore platform design and construction. He has contributed to all of Shell's deepwater developments, either in a technical or managerial role, including Auger, Mars, Ram/Powell, Ursa, Brutus, Bonga, and now Na Kika.
